Dahlonega to Helen
This lovely full-day excursion combines a look at Georgia's history with the beautiful scenery of Fall. Dahlonega was the center of Georgia's Gold Rush; Helen was site of a major lumber mill that harvested the wood in today's Chatthoochee National Forest.

To do along the way:
Dahlonega: Dahlonega Gold Museum, Smith House
Suches: Appalachian Trail
Highway 180: Lake Winfield Scott, Brasstown Bald
X:Unicoi State Park, Anna Ruby Falls
Helen: Oktoberfest.

Best viewing: Oct. 15-Oct 27

Take Highway 400 north until it ends. Turn left on Highway 19. At Stonepile Gap turn left on Highway 60. At Suches, turn right on Highway 180. After XX miles, Highway 180 turns left at US 19/129, then turns right. Brasstown Bald on left. At Highway 75 turn right and continue to Helen, Georgia.


Scenic Drive 2 Athens to Georgia-North Carolina State Line

America's Classic City is home to the University of Georgia, but it is also the gateway to a great getaway in the northeast Georgia mountains. Traveling north on Highway 441 the spendor of the leaf change is pleasantly accentuated by the mountains that surround you on most of this drive.

Best viewing Oct. 20-Nov. 1

From Athens, follow U. S. 441 north.

Scenic Drive 3 Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway (Ridge and Valley Scenic By-way).

This 47-mile scenic loop trail begins in LaFayette and takes you through northwest Georgia on a series of designated highways and backroads in the Ridge and Valley section of north Georgia.

Best viewing Oct 20-Nov. 1

Take Highway 136 (Exit 320) west from I-75. At Villanow turn right on Highway 201.

Scenic Drive 4

Southern Highroads Scenic Highway

Georgia designated this Scenic Highway in 1996. These roads take you into what once was the most remote area of the state, running east to west from Chatsworth to the South Carolina State line. The pristine land near this highway makes it an enjoyable journey from east to west or west to east.

Best viewing Oct 15-Oct 25

Directions: Take I-75, Exit 338 (Highway 76/41) east. Follow Highway 76 to the South Carolina Border.

Scenic Ride 5

Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad

Take a trip back to a time when railroads were a popular form of passenger travel. This wonderful break from driving lets everybody see leaf change. During the season they operate this 26-mile round-trip railroad 6 day a week (Thursday-Tuesday). The train, a combination of historic engines and passenger cars travels from Blue Ridge to McCaysville and returns .
