The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents
by Theda Perdue

A excellent compilation of historical documents regarding the Trail of Tears from the preeminent authority on the subject. This is exactly the kind of book we like, featuring the words of the people involved. The cover is part of a painting called "Men with Broken Hearts"
Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835
by Theda Perdue

Ms. Perdue proves her understanding of the complex matrilineal society of the Cherokee in this entry. While the discussion is broad ranging, according to the publisher, "Theda Perdue examines the roles and responsibilities of Cherokee women during the 18th and 19th centuries, a time of intense cultural change."
Cherokee Proud: A Guide for Tracing and Honoring Your Cherokee Ancestors
by Tony Mack, Mack McClure

This is a great book for tracing your roots.
Cherokee Renascence in the New Republic
by William G. McLoughlin

An exciting, chronological retelling of the events that shaped North Georgia before the "Trail of Tears." McLoughlin's grip on the subject is astounding, and his insights will appeal to non-historians.
The Trail of Tears
by John Ehle

A unique storytelling style marks one of the best historical sources of the events leading to the Trail of Tears, but beware, this is deep, intense reading. The book, while covering many of the historical figures of the events, tends to follow Ridge and his effect on the Cherokee Nation.
Cherokee Nation V. Georgia : Native American Rights (Landmark Supreme Court Cases)
by Victoria Sherrow

A broad-ranging discussion of the court cases that established the Cherokee Nation as sovereign five years before the Trail of Tears. Brisk, well-written, this explains complicated issues of justice for teens.
